Tony and Cherie cheer on British athletes at the Olympics
Tony and Cherie Blair were spotted among the crowds willing on British athletes to further Olympic success in Beijing yesterday. The Blairs saw cyclist Chris Hoy clinch another gold medal, bringing out tally to 16. in contrast to Gordon Brown, who has conspicuously stayed away from the event so far.
The former prime minister looked relaxed and fit as he sat with wife Cherie, daughter Kathryn and son Leo.
Mr Blair said: “It’s unbelievable. It’s been a fantastic event for the country. They showed such spirit, determination and enormous skill. We have had a really good Olympic Games and we can be even better the next time. That’s what we’re aiming for in London.”
At PATC we’re convinced it had nothing to do with his old rival being in Beijing, but Gordon Brown was suddenly so moved by Britain’s Olympic success - our best medal haul since the 1908 London Olympics - that he rushed out a statement:
“I think we’ve all been joyously watching the Olympics – to win at cycling, sailing and now on the track today and yet another set of great gold medals.
“It bodes so well for 2012 and I think the whole nation is totally delighted and really proud at everything that’s been achieved.
“It is a huge tribute to the Olympic team. I look forward to congratulating them.”
