Putin Back in 2012?
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has submitted a draft law to the Duma, the Russian parliament, to extend the presidential term of office from four to six years.
There are many observers who believe that this could be part of a strategy to return former president Putin to power once Medvedev’s term expires. Putin was limited to two four-year terms but has shown no signs of giving up power by returning as an extremely powerful prime minister who could conceivably return once again to the presidency after a four year break as the constitution only prohibits consecutive terms.
The Duma is dominated by supporters of Vladmir Putin which could mean that such a move will be successful paving the way for a Putin presidency to resume in 2012, although many would argue that he holds this position in all but name at the moment after handpicking his successor and remaining as prime minister.
He remains an extremely popular figure in Russia but there will be concerns around the world about his apparent intention to retain a grip on power in the country even if it means doing what some would argue is manipulating the constitution.
