Conservatives Plan To Beef Up Exam Standards

Exam results Shadow Children’s Secretary Michael Gove will announce Conservative plans today to restore confidence in the exam system. He aims to push exam standards watchdog Ofqual to ensure British exams are on a par with the best in the world.

Mr Gove points to pressure applied by Ofqual on individual exam boards as being responsible for “a deliberate lowering of standards”.

He said: “Standards slipped, more candidates would get a pass which was worth less. In other words, Ofqual devalued the exam.”

Mr Gove says: “I regard it as simply unacceptable that the exam standards watchdog should be acting in this way.

“And a future Conservative government would legislate to ensure this simply couldn’t happen.”
