A New Senator Kennedy?

She has always remained out of the limelight, or certainly the political fray, until her recent enthusiastic support for Barack Obama’s candidacy which included a role on his vice presidential selection committee, but Caroline Kennedy (pictured with Obama) - the only surviving child of JFK - is now reportedly being considered for the seat in the Senate set to be vacated by Hillary Clinton.

The rumours this week about Bill Clinton being considered for the role were always wide of the mark, but this may have a little more substance to it. Caroline Bouvier Kennedy has clearly discovered a new political streak in herself during this election campaign. She is close to the Obamas, is hugely popular in the country and of course Governor Patterson will be under pressure to replace Hillary with another woman for the remaining two years of her term.

Caroline is a political novice, despite her stellar heritage, and some may question her experience and suitability for the role. Although she is a woman, her decision along with uncle Ted Kennedy, to back Obama also upset many in the Democratic Party and in the state of New York. However, it is being reported by ABC News that the governor of New York State has spoken with her about the position which was once held by her uncle - Senator Robert Kennedy - who was assassinated 40 years ago.

If selected, and it still remains a very big if, she would join her uncle, now the patriarch of the family, in the Senate. Senator Edward Kennedy, known as the “Lion of the Senate”, is suffering from poor health after being diagnosed with a brain tumour this year.
